SERVE THE LORD AS EXPECTED

Glory and thanks be to the almighty God who made us to survive year 2016. I welcome all of us to the year 2017.  It is our Year of Living as Conquerors; a year in which we will serve God acceptably as captains of faith in Olota/Captain church, to hold Him to His promises. The Scripture says: “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God – II Corr. 1:20.  I pray that we will all experience His power, and His glory will radiate in our lives in Jesus name.

The book of Hebrews gives an inspiring proof of the supremacy and Excellency of Jesus Christ and His Gospel above the angels and the law. In verse 8 of chapter 13, we have the evergreen statement of truth of the constancy of Jesus Christ: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever”

Even though the world system keeps changing, kingdoms are rising and falling, and inventions become obsolete with time; the world order and the works of His hand remain constant. He is the perfect and unchanging creator of all. There is no variableness in Him. The truth of His word, therefore, must take precedence above the facts of the believers’ situations and challenges.

As Jesus is, so are his ways, His will and His word. True believers are exhorted to adhere strictly to His teaching and doctrine and to persevere in faith irrespective of the different situations and circumstances they may encounter in doing so; He that will serve him as expected will have to keep the standard. There is no lowering the standard for any reason. His expectation from faithful believers is the same.

Commands concerning Christian service are found in Hebrews chapter 13. They are the minimum irreducible expectation of the Master from every believer that will be approved of God here and in the hereafter.

Let brotherly love continue: – Heb. 13:1

Forget not to entertain strangers – Heb. 13:2

Remember those in bounds – Heb. 13:3

Remember the suffering

Be without covetousness   – Heb. 13:5

Be content in life

Remember your leaders to obey them  -Heb. 13: 7

The giver of these commands does not change. It is therefore expected that the service that will be acceptable will be that that does not fall below the set standard.

He who would serve God acceptably will emulate the faith, behaviour and activities of the fathers, the generals of faith who spoke the word to us in time past. They were not swayed by challenges, opposition or persecution of any kind. To them, the truth of Christ’s teaching and doctrine was stronger than the facts of what they had to suffer and the realities of what they had to bear {Romans 8:35-39)

Certainly and without doubts, these are hindrances and obstacles on the part of the believer who wants to serve God acceptably. The existence of false teachers and strange doctrines is real. In Hebrew 13: 9, it is written “be not carried away with diverse and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace, not with meats, which have not profited those that have been occupied with them”

The Israelites who trooped out triumphantly from Egypt had a direct experience of God, His wondrous love and His power. However they fell into error in the face of challenges. They could not hold the faith. (1Corrinthians 10:1-5) God was not pleased with them. Their bodies littered the desert. They were expected to remain steadfast in faith

In I Corinthians 10: 11 – 12,  it is written “These things happen to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us on WHOM THE FULFILLMENT OF THE AGES HAS COME. So, if you think you are standing firm be careful that you do not fall.”

We are the generation of believers on whom the fulfillment of age has come, really. Wickedness is on the rise, self serving is on the rise, conflicts in families, communities, nations, even in churches are on the rise; men are lovers of selves, not God, times are hard, faith is waning true to the prophecy of the end time.  All these constitute hindrances on the way of believers to render acceptable service. Nevertheless, the standard expected of believers remain unchanged even under the worst of any of these or all of them combined.

I bring them together under three broad headings viz:

  1.  DISTRACTIONS: Poverty and dearth of necessary supplies; sicknesses; persecution; famine; Hyperactive social economic life e.t.c
  2. DISTORTIONS: False teaching; False doctrines

III. OBSESSIONS: Power and position; Wealth, Food and drinks and the sensual; Materialism.

All these are stumbling blocks in the path of acceptable Christian service. They all constitute darkness however the bible says we are the light of the world, we should overcome the darkness therefore. Believers should keep the nature of God no matter the obstacle.

Serving the Lord as expected will entail the following

  1. Daily Preparation For Christ’s coming – Matthew 25: 1-13
  2. Daily Profiting For Christ – Matthew 25: 14-30

iii. Daily Pursuit of Soul Winning – Matthew 28:19

The Lord Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is constant in His way, unchanging in His will and absolute in his word. He that will follow him acceptably must follow his teaching and doctrine to keep the standard of Christian service/living all the time even though he faces opposition and rejection.
